چکیده

Classification-based approaches for segmenting medical images commonly suffer from missing ground truth: often one has to resort to manual labelings by human experts, which may show considerable intra-rater and inter-rater variability. We experimentally evaluate several latent class and latent score models for tumor classification based on manual segmentations of different quality, using approximate variational techniques for inference. For the first time, we also study models that make use of image feature information on this specific task. Additionally, we analyze the outcome of hybrid techniques formed by combining aspects of different models. Benchmarking results on simulated MR images of brain tumors are presented: while simple baseline techniques already gave very competitive performance, significant improvements could be made by explicitly accounting for rater quality. Furthermore, we point out the transfer of these models to the task of fusing manual tumor segmentations derived from different imaging modalities on real-world

Dendritic tree extraction from noisy maximum intensity projection images in C. elegans

BACKGROUND Maximum Intensity Projections (MIP) of neuronal dendritic trees obtained from confocal microscopy are frequently used to study the relationship between tree morphology and mechanosensory function in the model organism C. elegans. Extracting dendritic trees from noisy images remains however a strenuous process that has traditionally relied on manual approaches. Here, we focus on autom...

How to collect high quality segmentations: use human or computer drawn object boundaries?

High quality segmentations must be captured consistently for applications such as biomedical image analysis. While human drawn segmentations are often collected because they provide a consistent level of quality, computer drawn segmentations can be collected efficiently and inexpensively. In this paper, we examine how to leverage available human and computer resources to consistently create hig...

Knowledge Leverage from Contours to Bounding Boxes: A Concise Approach to Annotation

In the class based image segmentation problem, one of the major concerns is to provide large training data for learning complex graphical models. To alleviate the labeling effort, a concise annotation approach working on bounding boxes is introduced. The main idea is to leverage the knowledge learned from a few object contours for the inference of unknown contours in bounding boxes. To this end...

Automated tumor volumetry using computer-aided image segmentation.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES Accurate segmentation of brain tumors, and quantification of tumor volume, is important for diagnosis, monitoring, and planning therapeutic intervention. Manual segmentation is not widely used because of time constraints. Previous efforts have mainly produced methods that are tailored to a particular type of tumor or acquisition protocol and have mostly failed to produc...

Learning to Predict from Crowdsourced Data

Crowdsourcing services like Amazon’s Mechanical Turk have facilitated and greatly expedited the manual labeling process from a large number of human workers. However, spammers are often unavoidable and the crowdsourced labels can be very noisy. In this paper, we explicitly account for four sources for a noisy crowdsourced label: worker’s dedication to the task, his/her expertise, his/her defaul...
